Teachers Can Go to Math School This Summer (For Free!)

What’s Going On?

City College of New York (CCNY) and CUNY are giving math teachers a special chance:
They can take two evening classes this summer without paying tuition.
Those two classes count toward a bigger, 15-credit math badge called a “micro-credential.”

Who Can Join?

  • Teachers who work with grades 3-12
  • They must already teach in the NYC Public Schools “Algebra for All” program

Dates to Remember

What When
Priority application April 15
Last-chance (rolling) April 30
Classes start June 6 (Summer Session I)

All classes begin after 4:50 p.m. one day a week, so teachers can still teach during the day.

What Will Teachers Learn?

  • Teachers choose from math topics that sound fancy but are actually super useful:
  • Problem-Solving in Math (like tricky puzzles)
  • Data, Probability & Statistics (why surveys and graphs matter)
  • Ideas of Calculus (tiny changes make big differences)
  • Modeling with Algebra & Trig (turning real-life problems into equations)
  • History of Math (where cool math ideas came from)
  • Math for Younger Kids (making math fun for grades K-6)
  • Math Thinking (how mathematicians tackle questions)

Note: Teachers still need to buy their own textbooks and supplies.

How Do They Sign Up? (Easy Version)

  1. Fill out an online form (about 30 minutes). Pick these options in the form:
    • School of Education
    • Mathematics Education (Grades 5-9)
    • Advanced Certificate —> Non-Degree

2.Term: choose Fall 2024 (yes, even though classes are in summer).

Upload college transcripts. If tech acts up, fax them to (212) 650-6299. When asked to pay, click “Check.” The program covers the fee. Hit Submit! A confirmation email means it’s done.

    Why Should Students Care?

    • Your teacher comes back with new math tricks and fun ways to learn. Better teaching can make math feel less scary and more like a game. When teachers level up, the whole class wins!

    Quick Takeaway

    Tell your math teacher:
“Hey, there’s a free summer math program at CCNY—applications are due April 15!”

Learning never stops—especially for the people who teach us. They can apply here
