Each year, Freedom & Citizenship accepts up to 45 students into its summer and academic-year cohort. Here is what the program is looking for:
1. New York City Residents
Students must live in New York City to participate in the program.
2. Current High School Juniors
The program only accepts students who will be entering senior year after the summer seminar. For this cycle, that means the program is enrolling students from the Class of 2026.
3. First-Generation College-Bound Students Are Prioritized
The program prioritizes students who would be the first in their family to graduate from a college in the United States. If neither of your parents graduated from a U.S. college, you may qualify as first-generation.
4. Low-Income Students Are Prioritized
The program prioritizes students from low-income households, based on federal guidelines. One example shared by the program is a taxable household income of less than $48,225 for a family of four.
5. Vaccination Requirement
Students must be vaccinated for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), which is already a standard requirement for NYC schools.
6. Full-Year Commitment Required
Students must be ready to take part in the full summer and academic-year program.
Summer Commitment: Sunday–Friday, June 29 to July 25, with no absences except essential medical appointments.
Academic-Year Commitment: Two mentor meetings each month and two civic leadership group meetings each month, usually held after school on campus.
