FAFSA Tips You Need to Know
Share
College is expensive—there’s no way around it. But what if I told you there’s free money out there to help you pay for it? Yep, I’m talking about FAFSA.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the golden ticket to unlocking grants, scholarships, and even work-study opportunities that can make college way more affordable. Don’t leave money on the table just because the form feels overwhelming. I’ll break it down for you—step by step—so you can get every dollar you deserve.
What Exactly is FAFSA?
FAFSA is the form you fill out to see how much financial aid you can get. That aid comes in a few forms:
- Grants and Scholarships: This is free money. You don’t have to pay it back.
- Federal Student Loans: You borrow this money and pay it back later—usually with lower interest.
- Work-Study Programs: You can get a part-time job to earn money while in school.
Together, these create your financial aid package, which you’ll see in something called an award letter after you’re accepted to a college.
What's This “SAI” Thing?
Here’s something new: SAI stands for Student Aid Index. It replaced the old EFC (Expected Family Contribution), but the idea is the same—it’s a number that shows how much your family can afford to pay for college.
Here’s what SAI means for you:
- Negative SAI (-$1,500 to 0): You have high financial need. This might mean more grants and free money.
- Positive SAI (1 to 999,999): The higher the number, the less need you have—and you’ll qualify for fewer grants.
Understanding your SAI helps you make smarter decisions about where to apply and how much aid you can expect.

- Read the award letter: Understand how much money you’re getting and if there are any conditions (like maintaining a GPA).
